The purpose of the meeting is to provide training to radiotherapy professionals and the regulatory authority about the activities that needs to be considered and performed to reduce the likelihood of a medical error in radiotherapy. The IAEA will provide participants with a template to be used as a reference for the preparation of the national presentations. The participants must send their presentations to the IAEA at least one week before the meeting starting day The meeting is open to 30 participants from Member States. Each country is invited to nominate one participant who must match the profile described in the corresponding paragraph, indicating the order of priority. The participants should be radiotherapy professionals and established regulatory authorities in Member states where nuclear medicine is being performed. A maximum of 25 participants will be selected to participate in this training course. The meeting will be conducted in English; participants should be capable of freely expressing themselves and following presentations and discussions in this language. Participants are requested to submit OEH forms and proof of completion of the IAEA on-line training in Safety and Quality of Radiotherapy. The online training can be accessed here: http://elearning.iaea.org/m2/enrol/index.php?id=392 Nominations forms without OEH forms or candidates who have not completed the on-line training in Safety and Quality of Radiotherapy will not be considered. Candidates wishing to apply for this event should follow the steps below:. 1. Access the IAEA TALEO page (https://iaea.taleo.net/) and complete the Candidate Profile. 2. Be registered on the Nucleus page of the IAEA (https://nucleus.iaea.org/). 3. Through Nucleus, access the InTouch+ platform where the Profile is completed (My Profile tab) ( https://nucleus.iaea.org/Pages/InTouchPlus.aspx). NOTE: The email used for TALEO and Nucleus must be the same. If not, the candidate’s profile will not appear complete. 4. On the InTouch + platform, under the ‘My InTouch +’ tab, the candidate needs to: a. select the institute / organization that he/she works at / represents (‘My Institute’ section); b. click on the link called ‘Refresh Personal History Form’ to update the system, otherwise the nominations submitted will have these fields empty and it will not be possible to evaluate them during the selection of candidates (‘IAEA Recruitment Platform’ section). NOTE: Once the above steps are finalized, the candidate’s profile will appear as completed and he/she can apply for Technical Cooperation events. 5. In the InTouch+ platform (https://Intouchplus.iaea.org), in the ‘Applications’ tab, search by the event number provided in the invitation. The help for each step is located at the top of the page. For additional help on how to register, create a profile and apply for an event, please refer to the online guide and training videos available under the following links: how-to guide and training videos. Any issues or queries related to the new system can be addressed to InTouchPlus.Contact-Point@iaea.org or TC-AIPS-PL4.Contact-point@iaea.org. Should this not be possible, applicants may download the Nomination Form for the ME from the IAEA website https://www.iaea.org/services/technical-cooperation-programme/how-to-participate. Applications should contain sufficient information to establish that the nominees have the required qualifications. Completed applications need to be endorsed by the relevant national authority, i.e. the National Liaison Office and submitted through the established official channels.
AFRICAN DELEGATES ATTEND RADIATION PROTECTION CONFERENCE IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) organized the International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine from 11 – 15 December 2017 at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna – Austria. The theme for the Conference was “Radiation Protection in Medicine: Achieving Change in Practice”. This conference served as a follow up to the 2012 International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine, held in Bonn – Germany. The 2012 conference which was themed “Setting the Scene for the Next Decade” brought about the Bonn Call-for-Action. The conference, co-sponsored by the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization in cooperation with several international organizations, was directed at a wide audience with interest in radiation protection in medicine. These include: Health professionals, e.g. physicians practicing in radiological imaging, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy; referring medical practitioners. Medical physicists, radiographers and technologists; radiation protection professionals and engineers. Healthcare managers, health economists and risk communication experts. Representatives of patient organizations and manufacturers; health researchers and academics. Representatives of health authorities and regulatory authorities with a special responsibility in this field. The conference was attended by participants from all corners of the world, including Africa, who made oral and poster presentations. The African contingent had participants from countries such as Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo and Tunisia. President of FAMPO, Dr. Taofeeq Ige, leveraged on the platform created by the conference to hold a meeting with delegates amongst the African contingent (see insert picture). The meeting aimed at fostering collaboration and cooperation and advancing medical physics and radiation protection in medicine in Africa. FAMPO wishes to thank the organizers and sponsors for inviting delegates from Africa to participate in the conference.
ICTP/IAEA Sandwich Training Educational Programme
PhD fellowship opportunities in physics and mathematics Through its Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP), ICTP and its UN partner, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), offer fellowships to PhD students from developing countries in the fields of physics and mathematics. STEP’s goal is to strengthen the scientific capability of young scientists and researchers from developing countries to better contribute and serve the scientific, technical, and economic development of their home countries. STEP fellowships enrich their doctoral studies by giving students access to ICTP’s and the IAEA’s international community and world-class research and training facilities. Application deadlines are 15 February and 15 August. CLICK HERE TO APPLY With a STEP fellowship, PhD students study at their home universities but have the financial support to visit ICTP or a collaborating institute for a three- to six-month stay each year for up to three successive years. Fellows work on their PhD theses with their advisors at their home institutes and co-advisors at the hosting institutes. Their PhD is awarded at their home institutes. Fellowships are awarded on the merit of a thesis project proposed by students and their home country advisors. The STEP fellow is assigned to an appropriate host institute with a designated co-advisor. IAEA Fellowships: Financial support is provided by the IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation through the IAEA Technical Cooperation Fund. Candidates should be from an IAEA member state. The IAEA must receive an official endorsement for the fellow from the fellow’s country. Fields of research include: atomic and nuclear physics nuclear, isotope and laser techniques applied to: human health agriculture biotechnology and biophotonics water resources and environmental studies synchrotron radiation and applications medical radiation physics OFID Fellowships: ICTP and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) announce joint fellowships for research and training opportunities to PhD students in developing countries. ICTP Fellowships: Fellowships are also provided by ICTP, within its scientific and technical competence, to candidates from developing countries in the fields listed below: condensed matter and statistical physics high energy physics mathematics earth system physics applied physics (including micro- and nano-electronics, fluid dynamics) For further information please contact: ICTP-IAEA Sandwich Training Educational Programme c/o Postgraduate Diploma Programme The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics Strada Costiera, 11 I-34151 Trieste, Italy Ms. Sandra Alimanovic LB Room A/bis Telephone: +39 040 22 40 362 Telefax: +39 040 22 40 388 e-mail: step@ictp.it
