We are delighted to welcome you to the home of the Nigerian Medical Physics Association. This association was founded in 1986 with just 8 members but has now grown to over 200 members and counting. Physics is at the heart of modern medicine and physicists world over have been known to have made and are still making significant innovations and transformative contributions that have improved human health.
As a founding member of this great association, I am pleased to serve as president at a time when the Medical Physics profession in Nigeria is experiencing a new dawn. The science and medical community at large are gradually beginning to notice the key role medical physicists play as health professionals. Together with my team, we are working hard to get the national recognition the profession has long deserved.
I invite all medical and health professionals alike in the hospitals, research, industry and academia, local and international to join hands with us to continue to improve human health and medicine. We welcome collaborations from our sister organizations, equipment manufacturers, government agencies, regulatory bodies and well-wishers as we move to make NAMP an association of international standard.
Professor Fatai A. Balogun obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics (Nuclear Engineering) in 1980 from the University of Ife, Ile- Ife Nigeria. He proceeded to the University of Surrey, United Kingdom where he obtained his Masters of Science degree in Medical Physics and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Radiation Physics, U.K (1981 – 1986). He became a research scientist at the Centre for Energy Research and Development (CERD), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and rose along the ranks to become a Professor of Physics in 2002. In 2005, he was the pioneer Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research (NIRPR), a technical arm of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA). He has served on various expert missions and committees, fellow of several international scientific organizations and a visiting professor to tertiary institutions. He has supervised many undergraduate, masters and doctoral students in medical, radiation, nuclear physics and engineering. Alongside being a research professor at CERD and lecturer at the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics OAU. Until recently, he served as the director of the Lagos State University Radiation Monitoring and Protection Services.
